The Three Types Of Receding Gum Treatments

by | Apr 27, 2017 | Dental Care

If you have noticed that your gum-line seems a little thinner or appears to be moving downward from the tooth, you may have receding gums. It can be caused by many things, including inflammation, overuse of the toothbrush, and periodontal disease. While it is a serious problem, there are treatment options available to help.

When To Consider Treatments

If you have noticed a difference in your gum-line, it is time to see a periodontist, especially if the roots are exposed. Likewise, you should focus on how the teeth feel inside the mouth. If they seem loose or you notice blood, it is time to consider treatment for your receding gums.

Options

There are three primary options for treating this problem. If you catch it early enough, a cleaning may be all that’s needed. Your dentist will show you how to brush properly to prevent more recession. However, in most cases, grafting is required, which is a surgical procedure. There are three primary types, including allografting, CTG, and FGG.

Allografting uses tissue from another source other than you when your tissues aren’t appropriate. They have been tested and treated appropriately, so they shouldn’t cause adverse reactions. Then, the tissues can be placed similarly to CTG or FGG options, though most periodontists prefer CTG methods.

Through Connective Tissue Grafting, tissues are taken from below the palate. A pouch is created under the gum, and the pouch is pulled up over the tissues. In most cases, it provides a uniform colouring and more root coverage.

Free Gingival Grafting also uses tissue from the palate and places it by the gum site. However, it may not cover the roots or be the same colour as the rest of the gums.
